100s AND 120s CHARTS
Here you can print off a blank 100s or 120s Chart or one that is filled in. Have your child practice writing to 100 and 120. Look for and talk about patterns you see in the numbers. You can print off a chart that is filled in and then color in the numbers of the patterns you see. You can color in the number you would say when counting by 10s starting with any number. For example, if you start with 2, then you'd color in 2, 12, 22, 32, 42, 52, 62, 72, 82 and 92 (and 102 & 112 if you are using a 120s chart). In class we start with the number zero. Then the pattern is more obvious. The kids need to understand that on the first row zero actually can go in front of every number. Then on the second row, starting with the number 10, the number 1 gets a turn to go in front of every number. The kids need to understand that it isn't just a 1 though--it is a group of 10! The number 1 gets a turn to go in front of the other numbers, but it is in the TENS place and stands for a group of 10. So one (group of ten) in front of zero makes ten and one group in front of one makes eleven and so on. Then 2 groups of 10 get a turn to go in front of all the numbers. Eventually after 9 groups get a turn to go in front of 9 and you have 99, then 10 groups of 10 get a turn to go in front of 0 and you have 100! Cool! Then on the next row eleven groups get a turn and finally 12 groups. Your child can race the clock to see how fast he/she can write to 100 and 120. Try again in a wee or two and see if the time has decreased. You can print off 2 sheets and race your child. Good racing fun!!
